Wooden Shutters

To avoid overly complicating your shutter selection with numerous ranges and names, we manufacture two hardwood shutters, yellow poplar and elm wood. Both are solid hardwoods, kiln dried to avoid warping and twisting and equally conducive to making your window shutters to last the course of time. All timber used to make our wooden shutter is initially harvested from a sustainable sourced. When you buy wooden shutters from us, you are making a consicous choice to support the environmental issues which we face today.

Our wooden shutters are perfect for all types of windows, from bay windows (in Victorian homes for example) - to modern double glazed velux windows. 

Poplar wood has been used in the manufacture of quality shutters in North America for decades. The poplar tree is very fast growing and provides a consistent grain that gives your shutters strength throughout the wood, with no knots or weak points formed within your wooden shutters. Poplar wood has a subtle soft grain, leaving a great smooth finish when painted.

Elm has a deeper grain, very similar to oak and ideal for stained shutters. The stain soaks into the wood, highlighting the deep ridges and looks stunning when installed.

There is no difference in terms of quality or durability, it’s simply an aesthetic preference. The majority of shutters purchased are the poplar wood option this is due to the current popularity of smooth painted wooden shutters in the UK at present.

We do not sell shutters made from composite materials such as MDF, also known as LDF shutters. MDF is a great material for many things but not, in our opinion for making durable plantation shutters. MDF is not only heavier than timber but with so many parts of a shutter being regularly opened and closed, in time joint sections may split and these are difficult to repair.
