Tier on tier plantation shutters
Tier on tier plantation shutters (or double hung shutters as they are sometimes called) are similar to full height shutters in that they also cover the whole window. However tier on tier shutters are a popular choice due to their extra versatility. The shutter panels are split to have a top tier and a bottom tier. They have wooden louvers.
The top tier of louver shutters operates independently from the bottom section and can be opened back away from the window leaving the bottom section insitu. The slats on the bottom panels can then be slanted to give privacy, thus maximising light entering your room. This is ideal for windows at the front of a house or near a road where passers-by might be able to view the inside of your house.
The flexibility of tier on tier shutters gives you the option of having all the panels closed and light controlled by the slats being adjusted. As such they have similar aesthetic properties to full height shutters, whereby the shutter panels can hide the PVC windows (if you have these window) they are mounted in front of.
For optimum light and privacy, tier on tier style shutters are the perfect shutters choice. However before deciding on tier on tier shutters it’s worth asking yourself how you intend to use your shutters. Having the extra versatility is great but if you don’t open the top section regularly, you would be better advised to choose the full height option. This will mean you have fewer panels to open and close when you are accessing your window and you will have less solid wood running across the centre of it. Ideal for sash windows in period and Victorian properties as well as bay windows. Take a look at our gallery for examples.
